Split nail problem. How to repair without removing entire nail?

I've managed to tear the side of my right hand thumb nail. It's about 3mm in length, just below the white part of the nail, at a right angle - so if it tears, it will go straight across the quick of the nail - OUCH!!

Is there anything I can buy to repair this, or just to keep it from tearing until it grows a little %26amp; I can file it off?

It's just typical, as all my nails are at a lovely length and we're just starting to look good! :-(Split nail problem. How to repair without removing entire nail?
I'm a manicurist and the best thing you can do is ideally to go to a salon and have them repair it with silk or fibreglass (costs 拢5-拢10 for a quick fix on one nail usually in most places) definitely not gel or acrylic as that will not really help and could damage the nail more. You can also buy medical silk strips for this purpose from a haberdashers and stick it on with nail glue which you can buy in the nails section of boots. You paint a bit of the glue over the crack, stick the silk on and then repaint with the glue and repeat. It helps if you've carefully cut or filed your nail straight first though.Split nail problem. Oh dear sounds like you've got yourself a little problem here.

Im currently a training to be a beauty therapist and in my opinion you could try to file it on the side and smoothing it over so you don't have such a sharp area which could catch and tear your nail.

Try buffing your nail to smooth out the nail plate and you could also apply a nail strengthener to try and help your nail grow and strengthen.

Meanwhile to cover up the crack you could apply a varnish. You will still have to be extremely careful not to catch the side of your nail in the meantime.

Hope This Helps =]
What I do is put a small piece of tissue over the split, then a couple of coats of clear polish seals it! This works for me, although you may want to remove and replace every few days (as you would nail polish)
you could go to a nial bar and ask them to use some acrylic over the split and file it so it looks right... this is what i do when any of my nails split and i want to keep the length
